Midtown Alliance

The Heart behind Midtown Alliance

A substantial number of descendants of immigrants live & work in Toronto. For various reasons, most of them neither go to churches designed for all Canadians, nor ethnic churches designed for new immigrants. These people have their own culture & needs. They need a church designed especially for them. The Midtown Alliance Church was started primarily for this group of people. Besides trying to meet a felt need, there was also an aspiration to follow the practice of the apostle Paul.

“Though I am free & belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

May God use the Midtown Alliance Church to (a) gather a considerable number of children of immigrants, (b) build them up, & (c) train them to serve both their fellow children of immigrants & the needy! May God also raise-up a significant number of future workers for the Lord Jesus.

…Manjohn and Christina Wong

When Manjohn felt God’s call to the ministry, he immediately started preparing for service. In 1980, after he got his degree in Business Administration, he went to Canadian Theological College for his Master of Divinity. From then until 2002, he served as pastor of 3 Alliance churches (Regina, London, Ontario & Scarborough). He had an active part in the start of London Mandarin & East Toronto Mandarin Alliance Churches.

Manjohn sensed God’s call to plant churches in Canada for children (i.e. descendants) of immigrants. With the blessing of the Eastern Canadian District & Canadian Chinese Alliance Churches Association, he is going to start the Midtown Alliance Church at the Yonge & Eglinton neighborhood located at the centre of Toronto. It will be an English, multicultural church, designed especially for this generation.

Every five years. Every church multiplies.
